Woman Sent to Jail for Feeding Her Beloved Stray Cats, Fined $2000

A 79-year-old lady was sentenced to jail for ten days for trying to take care of her only real companions – the stray cats that she fed outside.  She had been feeding them for the past two years ever since a neighbor moved away and abandoned them.

‘I Miss My Own Kitties’

In an interview with Cleveland.com, Nancy Segula from Ohio said that she misses her “own kitties.  They passed away, my husband passed away. I’m lonely, so the cats and kitties outside help me.”  There are between 6-8 adult cats, and also kittens that visit her.

Unfortunately, there is a city ordinance where she lives that prohibits feeding stray cats and dogs. She said she was unaware that an ordinance like that existed, and that she just felt bad for the cats and wanted to make sure they had food.

Case to Be Explored Further

Garfield Heights Municipal Court Magistrate Jeffrey Short is the one who handed down her sentence, but he was covering for Judge Jennifer Weiler, who would like to further explore the case to see if she believes the sentence is actually a fair one.

Weiler said, “I’ll try to find out what’s going on, what’s happening and will then try to make a decision that makes sense for the circumstances.”
